Bukedo Baskets

A woman's group has skillfully weaved these baskets out of the stem of a banana leaf. The banana leaf stem is cut into thin strips with a knife which is called 'Obukedo' and these are dried, coiled, and bound to one another using Raffia or 'Buso' which comes from the raffia palm that is locally known as 'Bibbo'. These raffia palms grow near the shores of Lake Victoria and their leaves can grow up to 60 feet long. Raffia is the part of the newly shooting palm leaf that holds the leaf together before it opens. You can see many of the banana leaf stem coils in each basket, and the raffia is only used intermittently to create a spaced design.
